Food in Malaysia: Both the locals and tourist will enjoy.

All About Food

Malaysia is a heaven for food. If you love food you will definitely love Malaysia. However, usually the locals have their own secret hideouts and hidden gems that tourists don’t know. Therefore, this article is to help you discover some of the good food that locals love. Some might be well known and some are places that you will never think of.

Penang Char Koey Teow

First of all, I have to talk about one of everyone’s favourite food in Malaysia, Char Koay Teow. When you think of Malaysia you think of Penang Char Koay Teow. It is one of the most well known dishes in Malaysia. Of course there are different versions of it. In Penang we have Koay Teow Basah and the usual Char Koay Teow. However, for the usual dry Char Koay Teow is the non-halal one. Pork Lard is the key essence to a good Char Koay Teow. This one that I am about to share with you, is definitely not stingy with his pork lard.

Yes, it is in a coffee shop that sells curry mee (curry noodles) ! You did not get it wrong. It is definitely a hidden gem for both tourists and the locals. This Char Koay Teow was discovered by surprise, the taste was such a shocker. Who would have imagined a coffee shop that specialises in curry noodles to have such good Char Koay Teow. Hence, you can also request to add mantis prawns to your Char Koay Teow. It is definitely a must try if you are in Penang.

However, food is only served during dinner time. Make sure you find them on google and call them to see if they are open.

Penang White Curry Mee

Second, it is also one of the signature dishes in Penang White Curry Mee (White curry noodles). The difference of White Curry Mee and normal Curry noodles is that the broth for White Curry Mee is literally white in colour. In Penang, this curry mee in Burmah Road is very yummy and very flavourful. People say the key to a good White Curry Mee is the chilli. However, for this particular stall it is not the case. The broth itself is already very flavourful. In addition, if you add the chilli it will be a different kind of experience for your taste buds! I recommend trying it with and without the chilli. As for their selling point it is actually the duck blood. It has a jelly type texture, if you tried pig blood before, duck blood is slightly more smooth and delicate.

Most importantly, this place is very close to Sun ASA Education Penang office. If you plan to visit us and have a free consultation, you can head there for a good dinner! It is a must try whenever you are in Penang. Regardless if you are a local or a tourist you will love this place! Both dishes are also the signature food in Malaysia that can perfectly represent Malaysia. Nothing says Malaysian food like strong flavours, wok hei (charred taste), and the creamy spiced broth.

Puchong Wanton Mee

Next, let’s talk about wanton noodles. The texture of the noodles is a highly debatable topic. Some like it soft and some like the springy texture. As for this stall it is more towards the springy side. They serve it with their signature BBQ pork Char Siew. You can also choose to have the noodles dry or with soup.  However their most popular choice is their dry wonton noodles with Char Siew. The slightly charred and caramelised pork paired with some springy soy sauce noodles. Definitely a heavenly combo.

In addition, here is a tip for you. Make sure you go there earlier or else you will end up waiting for an hour for your wanton noodles. Moreover, it is located inside the big food court in puchong. So don’t be surprised when your google map brings you to a big food court.

Village Park Nasi Lemak

Lastly, one of the dishes that can best represent Malaysia, Nasi Lemak. It is the Number 1 breakfast in Malaysia. The coconut fragranced rice, the sweet and spicy sambal chilli, the crunchy peanuts and anchovies are the core ingredients for nasi lemak.

Village Park restaurant is very famous in Malaysia. Never once have I seen it with no queues outside the restaurant. It is always packed with people. Their fried chicken is their signature. Ayam Goreng Berempah is a Malay spiced fried chicken. The chicken is marinated in spices and deep fried to reveal a crust on the skin and moist juicy meat on the inside.
