Phrasal verbs sering digunakan dalam percakapan verbal dan tulisan yang menggabungkan antara kata kerja (verb) dengan satu atau dua partikel berupa kata keterangan (adverb) atau kata depan (preposition) atau gabungan keduanya. Contohnya adalah look for (mencari), dan put off (melepas).

Separable verbs
Ada beberapa phrasal verbs yang digunakan terpisah atau biasa disebut separable verbs. Contoh kalimatnya sebagai berikut:
We put off our trip menjadi We put our trip off atau We put it off (Kami menunda perjalanannya)
He kept teasing me, so finally I told him to cut it out (Dia selalu menggodaku, jadi saya berkata kepadanya untuk menghentikan itu).
Berikut ini beberapa contoh phrase yang sering dipakai pada percakapan sehari-hari:
Figure out find the solution to a problem
Hand in give papers/assignment to a teacher
Hand out give something to a person, then to another person
Look up look for information in a dictionary
Make up invent a story
Pick up lift
Put down stop holding or carrying
Put off postpone
Put on place clothes on someone’s body
Take off remove clothes from someone’s body
Throw away put in the trash
Turn off stop a machine or a light
Turn on start a machine or a light
Wake up stop sleeping
Write down write a note on a piece of paper

Phrasal verbs yang tidak dapat dipisah
Nah ada juga beberapa phrasal verbs yang tidak dapat dipisah (nonseparable phrasal verbs). Kata kerja ini selalu diikuti oleh partikel. Contoh kalimatnya sebagai berikut:
I ran into Bob
She got over it
The teacher called on Ali

Call on ask (someone) to speak in class
Come from originated
Get over recover from illness/shock
Get off leave from a bus / airplane / train

Intransitive Phrasal Verbs
Intransitive phrasal verbs adalah frasa kata kerja yang tidak diikuti oleh objek. Contohnya adalah sebagai berikut:
The machine broke down
Please come in
I fell down
Berikut ini beberapa daftar frasa yang bisa dipakai pada percakapan dan tulisan:
Break down stop functioning properly
Break out happen suddenly
Break up separate, end a relationship
Come in enter a room or a building
Dress up put on nice clothes
Eat out eat outside of someone’s home
Fall down fall to the ground
Get up get out of bed in the morning
Give up quit doing something or quit trying

Three-word Phrasal Verbs
Beberapa two-word verbs dapat menjadi three-word verbs, seperti contoh berikut:
- Last night some friends dropped in
- Let’s drop in on Alice’s this afternoon
- We dropped in on her last week
Kalimat (a) adalah sebuah intransitive phrasal verb karena tidak diikuti oleh objek. Kalimat (b) adalah sebuah three-word phrasal verb yang diikuti oleh objek. Kalimat ( c ) juga termasuk three-word phrasal verb yang nonseparable.
Berikut ini daftar three-word phrasal verbs yang sering kita jumpai pada lisan maupun tulisan
Drop in on visit without calling first or without an invitation
Drop out of stop attending the school
Fool sound with have fun while wasting time
Get along with have a good relationship with
